Job Description

Job Summary: CNC is in search for a hard worker who has plant experience and a passion to work in its Arboretum and to take care of its grounds. This includes planting, caging, and watering large amounts of trees; removing brush, mulching around trees, weed whipping and weeding. Mapping and taking inventories of both woody and herbaceous plants and working with volunteers may also be responsibilities of this position.

Objective: To provide upkeep of CNC’s Arboretum and grounds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • ? Take care of CNC’s Arboretum and grounds by planting and caging trees, mulching, mowing, weeding, pruning, mapping and record keeping
  • ? Safely and properly use powered brush saws, pole pruners, hand pruners and hand saws to remove brush
  • ? Assist with other land management and facilities work as assigned
  • ? Operate within all established safety and security procedures

Required Qualifications

  • ? At least 18 years old
  • ? Have a valid driver’s license
  • ? Physical abilities to carry out above mentioned tasks and must be able to lift 50 lbs regularly and occasionally lift 100 lbs
  • ? Operate within all established safety and security procedures
  • ? Experience identifying plants desired
  • ? Experience using power equipment preferred (mowers, weed whip, etc.)
  • ? Mental and physical capacity to:
    • Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (heat, high humidity, rain, etc. …
    • Tolerate poison ivy, snakes, mosquitoes, deer flies, bees, thorns and other insects
  • ? Hard worker who is able to maintain a positive attitude while often working alone
  • ? Pesticide Certification preferred (preference may be given to those with certification, but is not required).
  • ? Experience using spreadsheets, database and ideally GIS
  • ? Preference will be given to candidate with some college education, especially in plant identification. Plant ecology, GIS, database and Excel experience also desired.

Reports To: Director of Land and Facilities

Status: Full time, temporary (seasonal)

Schedule: Mon-Fri 8 am-5 pm (some evenings may be required if working with volunteers), up to 40 hrs/wk and 640 total hours

Start Date: April 22 or when available (flexible)

End Date: Through September if available (flexible)

Compensation & Benefits: $11/hr
